“There’s the dogs too,” Daisy said. “My apartment really is too small for two of them, and I’m gone for long hours. It’s not fair to have them cooped up most of the day.”

She pressed a kiss on Yuna’s hair. Their grip on each other tightened, like an unspoken bond.

“Do you live far from here?” Marie asked.

“Far enough for a clean start for my daughters. They already have enough going against them, I don’t want to restrict their lives further.” Yuna’s face clouded over.

Marie frowned, not understanding.

Yuna translated. “There’s our skin colour, and also my private life.”

“But that’s ridiculous.”

“In a perfect world, yes. But we’ve got to face realities. If my own aunt and great-aunts struggle, why should strangers be more accepting?” Yuna’s voice sounded final. Marie forbore from any more questions.

They asked for a price. Marie paused. The agents had named preposterous figures, sums that would probably be out of reach for a single mother and her partner.

“I really haven’t given it that much thought,” she said. “I’d need to figure out price statistics, and you’d need to see how much you can offer and still be able to make any improvements you need. Why don’t you come back another day when it’s light and have another look? Then you can also see the garden properly.” She’d already removed the monkshood root. It now rested in a plastic container in her freezer, wrapped in several layers of flannel. She should have thrown it out, but if she put it in the compost or the landfill, animals might get at it and poison themselves. At least she hoped this was her reason. She crossed her fingers behind her back.

Yuna gave her another bewitching smile. “Thank you.”

Marie had another, benign thought. She asked Daisy, “You said you’re allowed dogs in your apartment? I’m looking, with Dash, for a place to rent.”

“It’s a small block, a stone’s throw away from a dog park. If you would like to see

it?”

“I’d love to.” They shared a hopeful smile.
